Why are multilayer PCB always designed with an even number of layers?
2026-01-04
Multilayer PCB are predominantly designed with an even number of layers due to three main reasons: process efficiency, cost control, and design balance.
1.Core Process Limitations
Modern multilayer PCB manufacturing primarily employs the "core lamination" process. This involves stacking pre-made core layers (insulating layers with copper foil) and prepreg (uncured resin material) alternately, followed by thermal pressing to form a complete board. Since each core layer itself has an even number of copper layers (e.g., a double-sided board), if the total number of layers is odd, uneven stress distribution during thermal pressing can occur, increasing the risk of warpage and compromising the flatness and reliability of the final product.
2.Cost and Efficiency Optimization
An even number of layers maximizes production line efficiency. PCB lamination presses typically handle symmetrical structures in pairs. Even-layered boards can be laminated in a single operation, whereas odd-layered boards require additional steps such as adding dummy cores or special processing, leading to material waste and increased labor time. Statistics show that the production cost of odd-layered PCBs can be 20%–30% higher.
3.Advantages of Symmetrical Structure
An even number of layers facilitates symmetrical stack-up design, such as the "signal-ground-power-signal" configuration in a four-layer board. This symmetry helps counteract thermal stress, reduces board warping, and optimizes electromagnetic compatibility. In high-speed circuit design, symmetrical distribution of ground and power layers also minimizes impedance discontinuities in signal return paths.
Although odd-layered PCBs are not impossible to manufacture—they can be achieved through asymmetric stack-ups or by adding dummy layers—this often comes at the expense of performance and cost advantages. Therefore, unless specific requirements exist (such as extreme space constraints), engineering practice generally adheres to the even-layer design principle to achieve the optimal balance of reliability, performance, and cost-effectiveness.
