The demand for smart cars has exploded, and the shortage of high-end PCBA production capacity has triggered a chain reaction in the industry
2026-01-27
As the global automotive industry accelerates its transformation to electrification and intelligence, a chain reaction caused by the tight supply of high-end printed circuit board components (PCBA) is continuing to ferment in electronic manufacturing services (EMS) and the automotive supply chain. Recently, a number of leading automotive electronics manufacturers revealed that the delivery cycle of key PCBA orders for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), intelligent cockpits and in-vehicle communication modules has been extended to more than 12 weeks, and some specific process products are even "hard to find".
Industry analysis pointed out that the core driving force of this round of shortage is the exponential growth of smart car functional modules. The number and complexity of PCBA required for a single high-end smart electric vehicle has far exceeded that of traditional cars. Among them, HDI (high-density interconnect) boards and hardware and flex boards equipped with high-performance processors, high-speed signal transmission and strict thermal design are particularly urgent. These boards have high requirements for manufacturing processes and reliability (such as automotive-grade AEC-Q qualification), and suppliers with large-scale production capabilities are relatively concentrated.
"Not only chips, but now even the 'soil' that carries chips is also tense." A supply chain director said. Capacity bottlenecks mainly occur in the high-end PCB manufacturing in the front end and the complex SMT (surface mount technology) link in the back end. Automotive-grade PCBAs require dedicated clean production lines, stricter process control, and long validation cycles, resulting in capacity expansion that cannot keep up with the soaring market demand.
This situation has prompted OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to adopt unprecedented strategies. This includes signing long-term capacity lock-in agreements with core PCBA suppliers, paying capacity deposits in advance, and even directly investing in shares or jointly building special production lines. At the same time, the supply chain layout is being reshaped, and a number of China's leading EMS manufacturers are rapidly entering the automotive electronics track with their high-precision manufacturing experience in the fields of communications and consumer electronics, obtaining a large number of orders, becoming an important force in alleviating the contradiction between supply and demand.
Experts predict that the structural shortage of high-end PCBA may continue until the middle of next year. This is not only a stress test of the resilience of the global automotive electronics supply chain, but also accelerates the evolution of the entire PCBA industry towards higher technical added value, more reliable quality system and closer upstream and downstream collaboration. Whoever can break through the bottleneck of high-end production capacity faster will occupy a more favorable ecological niche in the trillion-scale smart car market.
