Visual inspection and AOI catch surface defects. But they cannot tell you if the board actually works.
That's where functional testing comes in.
What Is Functional Testing?
Functional testing (FCT) powers up your assembled PCBA and verifies that it performs exactly as designed-5-6. Unlike AOI or X-ray, which check solder joints and placement, functional testing confirms the board does what it's supposed to do – whether that's blinking an LED, driving a motor, or processing data.
